I wish I had more time to write.

I can’t get my writing done because my life is just too chaotic right now.

Could these be your words? I know I’ve had these thoughts myself. We think we must have large blocks of time totally dedicated to writing. All the conditions must be perfect. The truth is, all of us have some time to write. We just haven’t learned to order our time to fit it in. Julie-Allyson Ieron is a writer-publisher and mentor for Christian Writers Guild. Her book, Conquering the Time Factor: Twelve Myths That Steal Life’s Precious Moments, will change your thinking about your time and how you use it.

The twelve myths she examines are common “reasons” people give for not getting things done. In the first chapter, she addresses my number one problem, “I can’t say No.” Julie analyzes why we might feel that way, referring to the Bible to examine how Jesus dealt with this myth. A theme that runs through the entire book is that God has something specific for each of us to do. He has provided the time for us to accomplish it. We are responsible for ordering our time so that we can get it done. Often, it’s not a time problem, it’s a priority problem.

Another myth that I struggle with is “I just need a week without interruption.” In fact, I have experienced most of the twelve myths in my writing journey. Julie has accomplished a great deal using the techniques outlined in the book. She worked in a publishing house while writing in her “spare” time. She appears on radio and television, speaks at writers conferences and women’s retreats, and runs her own publishing business while serving as caregiver for family members. The tips she provides are truly proven in her own life.

Do you wish you could find one resource that would walk you through the process of getting your writing published? Well, Donna Clark Goodrich has done every beginning writer a favor by filling that need. The subtitle of the book is “The Complete How-to Book for Christian Writers.”

Oh, there are other “how-to-get-published” books for the Christian market out there. It’s just that most of them are out of date. Donna includes an FAQ section in the introductory section of the book. For each question, she lists the page number where the answer is found. There are a number of appendices that include how-to information on everything from Word shortcuts to how to form a writers’ group.

The book truly includes everything you need to know to get started as a freelance Christian writer today. There’s even a chapter entitled “Social Networking and Online Promotion.” It’s an oversize soft-cover book that feels much like a textbook, but it’s reasonably priced at $21.95 plus shipping.

How should I describe Polishing the PUGS?  It is the CliffsNotes of style books for writers seeking to get their work published. As an editor, Kathy Ide has been on the front lines correcting PUGS errors for years. How can a book review blog help you promote your writing? Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? When I started my book review blog in June of 2007, I didn’t plan to use it for anything other than sharing my thoughts about the books I was reading. But, now I’m getting free books to review and the traffic from the book review blog has helped increase the traffic to my website.

The main driver of traffic to my blog is my membership in the Thomas Nelson Publishers BookSneeze.com book review program. See details here. You must have an established book review blog in order to apply for the program. Because links of my reviews are on the BookSneeze site, I get traffic direct from Thomas Nelson. And, once visitors come to my blog, they sometimes click over to my website. It’s given me more traffic than I ever dreamed of. I also get books from author friends who know I have the blog. And, most of the time, I do not ask for these books, they just arrive in my mailbox.

I should be enthusiastic about the blog, then, shouldn’t I? Well, like any endeavor, Tennessee Christian Reader has its good points and bad points. And some points that I haven’t made up my mind about.

The Good

• Free books.
• Increased traffic to book review blog and my website.
• My book reviewing skills have improved because I had the opportunity to study the book review guidelines on BookSneeze. (This is available only to members once approved).

The Bad

• You have to read the books. (Go ahead and laugh, but it takes a lot of time from writing).
• You won’t always get the books you want. Because you have to post a review on any book you currently have before you can request another book, you’ll sometimes miss books you really want.
• BookSneeze is currently offering more ebooks than print books. Some are available in both formats, though.

The Uncertain

• Monetization? I put an Amazon associates link for every book review post. I say something like, “Take a look at this book on Amazon.com.” So far, I have earned nothing at all from Amazon sales.
• Promotion value? Is the increased traffic I’m getting helping me promote my writing? I don’t see increased subscribers to Blog4Writers. I don’t get invited to guest post on other blogs. There is no way to know if the time I spend on the book review blog is doing me any good.
• Reviews can be reworked to fit print pub guidelines and submitted as reprints. But, I wonder how many editors like previously published reviews.

Are you ready to work on your writing techniques? This book will help you do it in easy-to-swallow doses. Robert’s Rules of Writing is subtitled: “101 Unconventional Lessons Every Writer Needs to Know. On the back cover, there is a second subtitle: “But No One Has Ever Told You.”

Masello is a prolific professional writer, and he makes no bones about the fact that writing is work. Each rule is about two pages long, great for those of us with short attention spans. The first rule shocked me out of my socks: “Burn your journal.” After I recovered, I read on. “If you’re serious about writing—burn your journal and get to work.” His point is that journaling has its place, but, if you want to turn out publishable material, you have to plan, research, and organize as you write. Journaling might give you ideas, but it will not get your work published.

Every rule is useful, although some may go against what you have been taught. There is no “filler.” I read about half the book in one sitting. Then, I decided to read one every day to keep Masello’s “get real” advice uppermost in my mind. At first, I thought it was just for laughs, but he is serious about sharing with other writers the techniques and attitudes that have worked for him.

The book is not for beginners. In the introduction, Masello states that he assumes that you “know the basic principles already and that you don’t need a lecture on how to feel good about yourself.”

Imagine having a different editor, agent or published writer to sit down with you each day and share their experience in the Christian publishing industry. That’s what you get with For the Write Reason. Read a chapter a day for a month and get more person-to person inspiration than you’d ever get at a writers’ conference.

Each chapter begins with a personal story from someone who has succeeded in the publishing industry, sometimes in first person and sometimes in interview format. They share their successes, but they also describe their failures, disappointments, and doubts. The 31 chapters offer advice on topics every aspiring writer must deal with at some point. Examples are: “Born to Write” and “Confirming God’s Call.” Chapters close with Bible readings and an inspirational/devotional message. Finally, the writer challenges you to action with a question or “homework” assignment for the day. Also included are a number of appendices with practical information on how to get your work published.

Although the book is designed as a daily study or devotional, I think you’ll find it useful as a reference. The titles of the chapters will help you to identify stories that might be most helpful to you at any given time. Since it was published in 2005, you might think it contains old information. Don’t let that stop you from finding your own copy of this book. The basics are still the same.
