True, Sue. Yesterday's Upper Room e-mail devotion had a blurb on it that said that each day, Upper Room is read by 3 million people (100 countries, 40 languages). That's a lot of reach.

I am thrilled to find others who write aritcles. Most people in my writer's group are writing books and the same people have written few if any articles. Like Tracy said, "Articles reach further around the world by the millions!" If you're interested in ministry, this fact alone will get the truth out faster than a book. Thank you, Emily. Two thumbs up for article writing!

Great post, Emily. Another reason to write articles is that you can usually reach more people with your message. If I published a book, I'd do well to sell 5000 copies, but I've published articles in magazines with a circulation of 1.2 million. Quite a difference!

Emily,

You are exactly on target with this article. Magazine writing is important for every author--which is why I'm still writing for various magazines. It's good experience, good exposure and many other benefits. Authors can even take part of their book material and repurpose it into the magazines for even more exposure. It should be a continual part of every writer's life in my view.

Writing for the devotional market is my thing. For now that is where God has called me. I write for The Upper Room, Devotions published by Standard Publishing and Light for the Word published by Wesleyan Publishing House.

Emily,
When God gives us a gift, He expects us to use it. We are to use it for His glory, not ours. It is a difficult part of the writing process for me. I am constantly looking for markets (the paying kind) but then I write something for the church drama group and get feedback. eg. "This is the best thing I think you've done." This actually happened almost two weeks ago.
God knows what we need. He supplies us with those things.

Amazing how you wrote about the same battle that resides in me. I struggle with the same thoughts. But, like you, resolve that it is God's calling. My success is not measured in dollars, but in lives touched. So, I keep writing and blogging. If I didn't, I don't know what I'd do when I came in here. It's a lovely room God provided for me to do His work. Writing is something I must do for Him and in the process, my hope is that lives will be impacted for His glory.

I know what you mean. Especially the part about being able to do other things and not feel guilty that I'm not writing. I could get my house clean and keep it clean, have some nice, safe hobbies, spend hours reading. But no, I have to be a writer...

But that's the point, for me at least. I have to write. I've been doing it since grade school, and I can't stop. Being a writer is such a part of my identity that I can't let it go. It IS a calling, and I have to follow where it leads... or rather, where God leads me with it. sigh... Well, who needs a clean house anyway??
