Favorite Quotes for Writers

Mark Twain

When I get discouraged about writing, I often search the Web for quotes by other writers. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite quotes by and for writers.

  • The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean. —Robert Louis Stephenson.
  • The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is that you really want to say. —Mark Twain.
  • I am a writer because writing is the thing I do best. —Flannery O’Connor.
  • Fiction has a unique role in conveying Truth. In fact, only fiction that is Truth with a capital T is worthwhile. —Jerry B. Jenkins.
  • Always prefer the plain direct word to the long, vague one. Don’t implement promises, but keep them. — C. S. Lewis.
  • Writing every day isn’t something you have to do. It is something you get to do. —Lawrence Wilson.
  • You fail only if you stop writing. —Ray Bradbury.

    Emily,

Great quotations for writers. Thank you. I begin every day of my tweets with a quotation and a photo (if possible). Like here’s the one I used today:

“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.”
    — Theodor Geisel — Dr. Seuss

If people scroll through my twitter feed, they will see how I use this pattern every day and pick up other inspirational quotations.

Wonderful quotes. I personally know Lawrence Wilson from when I worked at a library and he came in. He is always a gentleman.

He was supposed to be at the Taylor Univ. conference. Did you see him there? I took some of his classes when he gave workshops at the Kentucky Conference one year. Also at the annual conference that Wesleyan Church used to have at their headquarters in Fishers, IN.

Yes, Emily, Lawrence was there, I took one of his classes on Saturday afternoon. He took part in two panel discussions on stage with several of the other faculty members.
