Information: Online Learning
Writers, are you looking to improve your craft? You can attend conferences or take writing classes in a college setting. If neither of these works for you, now there are many online courses for the writer needing to improve. The list below contains some online sources for Christian writers to further their writing education. I have taken courses and served as instructor in PEN Institute’s precursor. However, I have not taken any courses through the other groups.
- Serious Writer Academy: The classes are affordably priced from $10-$99. Check out the courses page for their offerings. There is a 7-day money-back guarantee once you purchase a course.
- The Christian Writers Institute: The complete list of courses is here. The format may be audio, video, or PDF. On the Home page, there’s a drop-down menu that shows you the courses listed in each format. The instructors are the same ones you might see at conferences around the country. Pricing is generally affordable. However, video courses are pricier than audio or PDF courses.
- The PEN Institute: Part of The Christian PEN (Proofreaders and Editors Network), the PEN Institute offers courses for writers who want to be editors. Several years ago, I took some of their courses, and I think it helped me be a better writer. There’s a multi-page list of courses starting here.
- Writer’s Digest Workshops: WD offers a wide variety of writing courses, not necessarily limited to the Christian market. This is probably the most expensive option. Browse their offerings by genre on this page.
Inspiration: Quotes from Famous Writers
“Sometimes people say to me, “I want to write, but I have five kids, a full-time job, a wife who beats me, a tremendous debt to my parents,” and so on. I say to them, “There is no excuse. If you want to write, write. This is your life. You are responsible for it. You will not live forever. Don’t wait. Make the time now, even if it is ten minutes once a week.” —Natalie Goldberg
“Write even when you don’t want to, don’t much like what you are writing, and aren’t writing particularly well.” —Agatha Christie
These quotes are from Advice to Writers: A Compendium of Quotes, Anecdotes, and Writerly Wisdom from a Dazzling Array of Literary Lights by Jon Winokur, Vintage Books (Random House), 1999.
